Why there is no single right number

Your body spends energy in three broad ways, and only one of them is under much conscious control.

The most common mistake is picking a level too high. Three gym sessions a week alongside a desk job is "lightly to moderately active", not "very active". An hour of training does not undo nine hours of sitting, and people who train hard often move less for the rest of the day without noticing.
